Ingrowing toenails
Are ingrowing toenails causing you pain?
An ingrowing toenail happens when the edge of the nail presses into or cuts the surrounding
skin. This can make the toe feel tender, sore, and uncomfortable — especially in shoes. If left
untreated, the area can easily become infected as the nail continues to grow into the skin.
Early treatment helps relieve the pain and prevent further problems.
What causes ingrowing toenails?
Ingrowing toenails can develop for several reasons. Tight or narrow footwear — including steel toe cap boots — can place pressure on the nail, encouraging it to dig into the skin. The way you walk (your gait) can also add pressure to the nail edges.
Some people naturally have curved or angled nails, which makes ingrowing more likely. Incorrect nail cutting is another common cause; trimming nails too short or rounding the edges can lead to the nail growing inwards instead of straight.
If you notice pain from a nail digging into the skin, it’s best to get help early to avoid infection. In some cases, Pedisafe medical nail reconstruction can help guide the nail to grow correctly again. You can learn more about Pedisafe in the Services tab.
