What Are Verrucae?
These are commonly known as warts on your feet and are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Characterised by lumps with an irregular surface, they can vary in size and shape and will usually have black dots. Pressure on a verruca can cause pain and, if left untreated, it can spread easily. The virus thrives in warm, moist conditions and is often picked up in swimming pools or changing rooms. Treatment can be difficult because it is a viral infection and may require time and persistence to achieve successful clearance.
Is It a Verruca or a Corn?
People often mistake verrucae for corns and vice versa. As a general guide, a corn is usually more painful when pressed directly, whereas a verruca is often more uncomfortable when squeezed from side to side. This is because they have very different structures and causes. In some cases, it is even possible to have a corn over a verruca, making identification more difficult.
