OUT AND ABOUT IN JUNE
Embracing the Great Outdoors.
June is the month when people finally start getting out and about again. The lighter days mean more walking, more gardening, more time in the garden with a cuppa, and more little trips out. It’s lovely to see, but it’s also the time of year when feet start to struggle a bit more.
One thing I always remind people is that going barefoot isn’t always the safest option. It feels nice, but it only takes one tiny piece of debris to cause a problem. I recently treated a gentleman who stepped on a small shard of glass that a carer had accidentally missed while cleaning up. It was indoors, not outside, and it caused a deep cut that took weeks to settle. Light, supportive footwear makes a big difference, even around the house.
June also includes Loneliness Awareness Week, and it’s a good reminder that for many people, a clinic visit is more than just a treatment. Some clients don’t get out much or don’t have many people to talk to, so their appointment becomes a moment to chat, breathe, and feel looked after. I always try to make sure people leave feeling lighter than when they arrived.
It’s also camping season, and that means long days on your feet. A bit of simple preparation goes a long way — trimmed nails, smooth skin, good socks, and footwear that supports you properly. Your feet work hard for you when you’re outdoors, so giving them a little care beforehand helps you enjoy the day without aches or blisters following you home.
And of course, June is Lemon Month, which always makes me smile because I’m known for my hot water with lemon. It’s such a simple habit, but staying hydrated really does help with tired legs, cramps, and general comfort when you’re more active.
Moo has also been enjoying the sunnier days. She’s been out in the garden more, escorting customers out of the garden and having her little chats. Customers who like cats always stop to say hello to her, and they’re delighted when she miaows back. She brings a lot of comfort to people who arrive feeling nervous or low — it’s amazing how much difference a friendly cat can make.
June is a lovely month to enjoy being outside, moving more, and feeling a bit brighter. If your feet are holding you back, or you’re not as comfortable as you’d like to be, a little care now can make the whole summer feel easier.
